Having professional headshots taken is one of the most important things that you will do if you are a performer. Your headshot is often times the first thing that a potential client will see. There are times when your headshot is the only thing a casting agent will see and may hire you directly from it and your resume.
The fact is that most casting agents look at the headshots of talent before deciding whom to bring in for an actual audition. For this reason alone you want to be sure that you are working with a photographer who will help you get the best professional headshots that your money can buy.
Preparing For a Professional Headshot Photography Session - Think first about what the headshot photos are for and who will see them. Then think about the process that creates the right head shot to show that group.
2 Main Formats for Acting Headshots - These days there are two main formats for acting headshots. “New York Legit” or "LA Style"
“New York Legit” is the more traditional one and probably will work for almost all applications. It consists of an 8x10 print on matte paper with a fairly tight view of your face and shoulders. The picture area covers the whole sheet of paper—no borders.
“L.A. Style,” once used more in the film industry. (L.A.--Hollywood--movies. Get it?) Now this style is at least as common in all markets as New York Legit. L.A. Style head shots have wide white borders with the actor's name appearing outside the photo area. Ironically, even though the picture area is smaller, the photo usually shows more of the body, making facial features smaller still.

Makeup
Though makeup is optional for our sessions, powder can be important to reduce any potential shine. Feel free to come prepared in advance. Acting headshots usually work best with a natural makeup look.
An average session price for the makeup artists I refer is $150. Some will do light hair, others do not. Some will do hair for an additional fee. It's necessary to discuss those specifics directly with the MUA you are considering
Wardrobe
You are responsible for your own wardrobe. We can cycle through unlimited wardrobe changes during the session. For headshots especially, I generally recommend dark solid colors. White clothes can sometimes cause issues. I recommend bringing at least three changes.
Scheduling/Deposit
A 50 percent deposit is required to secure an appointment. If you need to cancel, please call prior to 48 hours of your appointment to avoid a forfeiture of payment.
"What is it you look for in a headshot?"
Sara Cooper: A headshot needs to be you on a really good day. Don’t have a glamour shot. I don’t like those. I’m not a fan of color. I like black & white. But black & white or color, go with whatever you feel represents you best.
"How Many Acting Headshots Should You Have?"
Sara Cooper: This question may seem simple, but knowing the answer can make all the difference in your career. What’s most important to know is that there are lots of variables to consider when making your decision...Acting Headshots, Resumes, Cover Letters - Oh My! - Your resume, cover letter, and headshot are really the first impressions you'll ever make. They act as your agent-good ones get you auditions, bad ones don't.
Should you pay an agency to print her comp cards. Our answer... NO WAY!!!! If an agency prints your comp cards a few negative things happen.
#1 - They put their logo on the card. Now that's great for them - but then you can't use the card at any other agencies. If you are only going to sign with one agency - you might as well not waste your time and money. There is no single agency that has access to all of the work.
#2 - If an agency is going to produce your card - they will be copying the images from your prints - this ALWAYS results in poor quality reproduction.
